Downloaded the kde iso, the cinnamon one and the XFCE one. Intended to try them all as a live environment before deciding which to actually install. Problem is no matter what settings I choose none of them will load up to the desktop on my main machine.
All of them load happily on my old Thinkpad T430 laptop, so the iso and the usb writing are clearly not faulty. I have actually installed the Cinnamon version as a test and all is great on the T430. The main Gentoo live iso also loads on the main machine with no problems, so I’m obviously frustrated.
What happens is the usb boots, the spinning circle spins a good few times but then a sudden very brief flash of text appears in the top left hand corner followed by a blinking dash and then nothing else happens just the blinking dash.
Obviously something differs between the T430 and the main machine as one works as it should and the other doesn’t.
Any ideas please? Main machine has an ASUS AMD4 gaming motherboard with a Ryzen 5600g processor, 32 gb RAM and would normally boot off a Samsung Pro 970 nvme. I’ve also tried different USB sockets but made no difference. Thanks for your time.
Hi, my answer does not help to solve the problem, I am just writing to tell you that I have a similar problem since last December, I downloaded the CLD KDE ISO image to install it and I get the same result; I tried with all the monthly ISOs up to the last one available (June) and nothing has changed. This happens on a new HP Z1 G8 desktop computer
PROCESSOR INTEL CORE i7 11TH GEN.
I also asked for help on the Forum but no one was able to indicate the solution to the problem, perhaps by contacting the “daddy” of CLD or by writing on the Russian Forum we get the solution but I don’t know how to do it because I don’t know Russian
?? Don’t understand. I’ve tried every setting offered by the usb stick but to no avail. Clearly if I’ve 1) tried every offered setting and 2) the usb installs happily on my Thinkpad T430, then there is obviously something not right with the usb build. Whatever I do or try with the usb it will not load the desktop, despite quite happily fully installing on the Thinkpad. As stated - the native kde live iso provided by Gentoo works fine, so I’m wondering - what is the difference between the Calculate iso and the native Gentoo iso as the former will not correctly load and the latter does so quite efficiently.
Done that. Booted usb many times with every possible option. Just doesn’t work. I have a Ryzen 5600g with built in graphics. These are Radeon graphics. I have selected Radeon with composite then without composite. I have selected AMD graphics with and without. I have left it as default as Auto with no selection. I have set the resolution and not set the resolution. I’ve tried every single option on the grub menu - nothing. The same usb booted immediately and correctly on the T430 and as already stated I fully installed the distribution so as I’ve already said - it is something to do with my attempts to load on to my desktop system Ryzen 5600g, Asus X570 gaming motherboard, 32gb of 3200 ram. The usb boots, the spinning circle comes up and then there is a very quick flash of some text in the left hand top corner and after that just a flashing dash type cursor for eternity. This is exactly the same result as when I tried the live usb 3 or 4 different times during 2024.
My experience. This is how Live disk behaved with a Radeon graphics card on the target system. Selecting a card during boot is F3. There are other VGA cards there.
The next option is to boot in console mode and then install from the command line. I did something like this (I may be a little mistaken, but there is a full help file with the system):
After booting from disk: Find out the network card name #ip a - it turned out to be enp1s0.
I create partitions: #cfdisk -
/dev/sda1 -10g - type 82 (swap).
/dev/sda2 -155g - type 83 (Linux), I assume it will be root,
When saving partitions, specify yes, just “y” will not work.
I should also add one more thing. On the AMD A320 motherboard it worked only in the UEFI - GPT variant, when setting video the “amdgpu” video card - not “AMD Rysen”.
Thanks. I literally have tried every single setting with no success. Sometimes there are three little dots in the middle of the screen and then it goes to a command line login prompt. Other times the spinning circle appears for a while then there is a very brief flash of dialogue in the top left hand corner too fast to decipher and a flashing dash or cursor appears and stays there permanently until I get tired of waiting and power off. Calculate just seems incompatible with my computer for some reason.
Hi, It seems it gets stuck between the initrd and loading of the squashfs? Maybe just try creating a liveusb the manual way, following LiveUSB - Gentoo wiki
(in stead of using ‘dd’ to write the image).
To read the error messages: make a video, and use pause.
